Methodist Church Update - February 2024
We have received notice that the Methodist Church intend to sell the building which now gives us less than 2 months in which to put together a bid.
The Parish Council are in ongoing discussions regarding the sale of the building for which, Community Asset Status was granted in March 2023.
The parish survey run over the last year has resulted in over 90% of the village wanting a Village Hall and a similar number are keen for us to pursue the Methodist Church as a suitable option.
We are applying for grants, but it might also be necessary to apply for a loan. This would mean increasing the amount of money the Parish Council receives through the Council Tax. We would therefore like to know if villagers will support this, hopefully in the short term, as fundraising and grant applications will be on-going to off-set any loan repayments.
Please complete the attached consultation document and return to the Parish Council Clerk or complete the online version. https://forms.gle/Aif6jaUaeW8WdJin7
Parish Councillors will also be at the coffee morning on 2 March and accepting returns too.
Terrington St John Methodist Church Community Building Consultation
It was the end of an era for a West Norfolk community this week as one of its churches closed its doors for good. Worshippers gathered for the final time at the Methodist Church in Terrington St John (TSJ) in May 2022, 16 years after the Ely Row building was first opened. (Extract from the Lynn News 28.5.22)
What does TSJ Methodist Church have?
The building is located on Ely Row, just off School Road, close to Main Road. At the front there is a car park and to the rear a grassed area. Inside there is a hall area that can be separated into two areas by a glass screen. Additionally, there is a kitchen, office area, toilets, entrance area and storage room. A redevelopment of the building was completed in 2006.
So, what next for the building?
Community buildings and village halls are widely recognised as vital components of community and social infrastructure. Strategically located, multi-purpose, well-run and sustainable community buildings are a vital asset to existing communities.
They are venues for a range of community and leisure activities where local people can come together to organise and participate in social activities which help to build community spirit and local resilience. Importantly, they provide opportunities for access to local service delivery for example leisure and volunteer-led social activities.
We need to hear your views.
Should the Parish Council purchase the building?
It is important for the Parish Council to know whether this is something the community wants to happen. How do you envisage the building being used, what events and activities would you like to see held there? Do you feel the building will be used enough considering the availability of alternative building in neighbouring villages?
